About James

James is an admitted attorney with a broad background spanning private practice, in-house legal roles and governance. He began his career at a major South African law firm and later joined the in-house legal division of an international auditing and advisory firm. He has also worked abroad as in-house counsel.

In addition to his legal practice, James has held leadership roles, including as a non-executive director and trustee of a national medical aid scheme, where he contributed to strategic governance, compliance and regulatory oversight. He is also a qualified commercial and family mediator, bringing a practical, solution-oriented approach to complex negotiations and policy challenges.

Currently, James operates as an independent legal adviser, specialising in commercial law. His advisory work focuses on drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts, regulatory compliance and advising on the legal dimensions of business operations and transactions.

At StratEcon, James contributes to projects that require regulatory and policy research, analysis, and reform. His legal expertise adds strategic value to StratEcon’s economic consulting work, particularly in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare and public-private partnerships, where law, policy and economic outcomes overlap. James brings a critical legal lens to StratEcon’s consulting work, ensuring that economic modelling and feasibility assessments are aligned with current regulatory environments and future legislative considerations.
His contributions help clients not only assess the financial and economic viability of projects but also understand and navigate the legal and policy landscape in which those projects operate. By integrating legal insight with economic analysis, James enhances the strategic depth and robustness of StratEcon’s deliverables, particularly in projects involving regulatory impact assessments, policy reform proposals and sector-wide strategic planning. His ability to integrate legal insight with economic strategy strengthens the overall quality and relevance of the firm’s deliverables.
